Constance finger weaving

Hi, I'm Constance. I am working on a finger weaving project for my friend, Bill. It will end up being a sash that he ties around his waist, Native American style.

Constance and finger weaving project

This craft was taught to me by Cherokee weavers up in Tennessee back when I was in college. There is no loom needed. I just have it tied temporarily to this post to help me keep tension on the threads as I weave. The warp becomes a woof thread until it reaches the end of the piece where it is turned down and becomes warp again. I will put a picture up as I progress on this project. It will end up looking like a very colorful rattlesnake skin as it is in a diamond pattern.

knit rug

This is a hand knitted rug made by Marilyn. She first knits the size of the rug she wants, then pulls through little strips of pre-cut cloth to make the rug's loops. Strips can be sewn together to make a larger rug. The long strip makes an excellent draft dodger to put in front of your door on a cold winter day.
Brenda Harkins sewing

Here is Brenda Harkins, president of the Educational Committee, busy sewing mob caps for our school tour children. With the help of the other ladies, Brenda and co have made 75 mob caps for the girls and 75 bandanas for the boys.
Constance & Donia

I am taking a planning break with my friend, Donia, over some wonderful watermelon. We have a united vision to see the village and the crafts demonstrations as unique teaching opportunities to share with local school children. So, together with Brenda who you see sewing above, we formed an Educational Committee.

StopThe Educational Committee made period costumes to wear during school visits and held some crafting classes. We are also making our own costumes to wear during shows in the Village -- and learned a great deal about our ancestors in the process. Just click the navigation bar to continue visiting our site.
Just a sad note. Brenda Harkins passed away in 2006. The Educational Committee was not renewed by the Board in 2007, so there are no more escorted school tours available. We still welcome school children and home schoolers to visit on your own. Come by the school house in the village and we will be happy to talk with you and show you things from the past in a one room school.
